The self-styled republic of Somaliland on Monday called for the transitional federal government of Somalia and the international community to recognize that Somaliland is an independent nation.


In an interview with BBC Somali Service, Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, Somaliland's minister of foreign affairs said his administration is welcoming a statement from the president of Somalia, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed that he was apologizing for the problems Somaliland had already encountered from the former military rule.

He said Somaliland has sincerely merged with southern Somalia in 1960, but later decided to secede because it was bothered.

Asked about his trip with officers to Ethiopia, the minister said there had been some problems in crossing border Somaliland people had faced in the last few weeks from the police of self administrated Somali region in Ethiopia, adding they discussed the government of Ethiopia about those renewed border problems.

Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, Somaliland's minister of foreign affairs noted the discussions ended with mutual understanding.

The president of Somali interim federal government of Somalia on Sunday said, while at a ceremony marking the 51st anniversary of the northern Somalia independence from the British colony which was dated 26 June 1960, he is apologizing for the northern Somalia people about the problems they encountered from the former military regime.
