Horn of Africa:Severe Food Crisis Hits Region

Eastern Africa is experiencing what has been described as the "most severe food crisis in the world today", with at least 10 million people affected in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Uganda, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).


Ethiopia to Deploy 4,200 Troops in Abyei

A special force unit of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) [armed wing of Oromo Liberation Front] has attacked an enemy military training camp during night on 19 June 2011, and inflicted heavy casualty on enemy troops in East Harerge Zone [in eastern Ethiopia], Haramaya Adele county at a place called Iresa, a report we received from OLA eastern Oromiya [Regional State] command revealed.


Ethiopia; Two Journalists Arrested as Pressure Mounts on Privately-Owned Media

Reporters Without Borders condemns the arrests of two journalists working for privately-owned newspapers in the past few days.

The latest victim is Reyot Alemu, a young woman reporter for the Amharic-language weekly Fitih, who was arrested on 21 June, two days after the arrest of Woubeshet Taye, the deputy editor of the Amharic-language Awramba Times. Both are now the subject of a judicial investigation and are being held at the Addis Ababa centre for federal investigations in Maekelawi.


USA trying to block Eritrean Airlines' bid to buy, lease planes - official

Asmara, 27 June: A senior Eritrean Foreign Ministry official has said that the US Administration has applied pressure prohibiting companies from leasing aircraft to Eritrea. He stated that Washington is resorting to such illegal acts as part of its hostile attempts of stiffening anti-Eritrea sanctions at a time when the Eritrean government is engaged in programmes of buying and leasing of passenger planes under a new Pakistani management.
